Lighting Strikes Sea Turtle Recovery Building & Ignites Fire at Turtle Back Zoo

WEST ORANGE, NJ -- West Orange Public Information Officer Joseph Fagan reported that the fire department received a call from Turtle Back Zoo at approximately 9:46 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28.  A zoo employee stated that lightning had struck the Sea Turtle Recovery Building and started a fire.

West Orange's Fire Department and Police Department were dispatched to the scene. According to the fire department, "Essex County Sherriff Officers were dispatched as well as mutual aid. Nutley Hazmat was requested but later canceled. The fire was extinguished and is being investigated at this time."
