CAMDEN - A Wednesday fire in the Salvation Army Kroc Center roof remained under investigation on Thursday, Camden Fire Chief Jesse Flax told TAPinto Camden. No one was hurt.

The preliminary investigation showed the fire may have started in an electrical box near a solar panel on the building’s roof, Flax said. The fire took roughly a half-hour to extinguish, and there was smoke damage to the building, Flax said.

Benjamin Ovadia, the center’s community resource and development director, told TAPinto Camden that the fire caused “significant damage to sections of the building,”

The fire marshal has deemed the fire a “high priority” and was likely to make a final ruling on the fire’s cause on Friday, Flax said.

A financial estimate of the damage was unavailable. Ovadia declined to comment on the cause.

Only individuals who had scheduled appointments at the food pantry were allowed into the center on Thursday, according to a post on the center’s website.

The center will reopen for members only at 6 a.m. on Friday, Ovadia said. Those coming to the center to use the pools, fitness center and gym, or attend an adult ministry or special event at the center on Friday, should follow the detour signs. Friday’s open gym attendees should use Entrance A as they usually do, according to the center’s website.

Information regarding continuing other center programs will be made on the center’s website and social media channels as it becomes available, according to the center’s website.
