RIDGEWOOD, NJ – After a successful 2023 campaign that saw them fall just short in the postseason, the Ridgewood boys soccer program seems poised for a breakthrough in 2024.

The Maroons finished last season with an impressive record of 13-5-1 and reached the sectional semifinals before losing to top-seeded Clifton. Now with a new crop of talent at his disposal, Head Coach Aidan McCluskey is hoping that his squad can repeat the success of last year.

Ridgewood started off the season strong, winning their first four games by a combined score of 10-4. After losing three of their next four games ahead of the start of the Bergen County Tournament, the Maroons really hit their stride, losing just once the rest of the season before their season-ending defeat to the Mustangs in the sectional semifinal. In 2024, McCluskey is confident that Ridgewood can find their good form again despite a difficult schedule.

“Not sure we found our stride in the middle of the season because we went 4-0 before getting beaten by Paramus,” the Ridgewood coach said. “After that defeat though, it changed our mentality to really focus on how we play, and from there, I think we played very well.”

“I believe we need to have laser focus again, especially because of the schedule we have this year and with that focus I think we will be competitive,” McCluskey added.

Like with any high school program, Ridgewood suffered its fair share of losses due to graduation. A total of six starters from last year’s team – Aidan Linnington, Parker Wilson, Cole Casey, Jack Hur, Jacob Marcovici and Steven Grana – will all be “big losses”, according to McCluskey. However, the veteran head coach likes the group that will fill the vacancies left by the departed senior class, saying that the collection of Bassim Madrid, Connor Holt, Aarav Patel, Doje Sim, Dylan Solano, Mico Martirossian and Alex Caffrey puts Ridgewood “in good hands with these replacements”.

Ridgewood is also expected to rely on some new faces who will be making their varsity debuts in 2024. That group includes Jayden Lee, Koen Randelma, Danny Huang and Toi Mauri “who should all contribute to our team, and I think can play at the varsity level,” said McCluskey.

Ridgewood is scheduled to open their season on the road against Chatham on September 6 at 4:15.
