SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Annual St. John’s Baptist Church Gerald Alston Back to School Community Fair will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the church located at 2387 Morse Avenue in Scotch Plains.

The fair was named to honor the memory of Gerald Alston, a long-time member of the church who was a Sunday School teacher and part of the Outreach ministry. Alston was one of the original people who started the church’s school fair. Pastor Wallace renamed the fair to celebrate all the work Alston did for the church and community.

"St. John's is excited to be able to celebrate our Annual Gerald Alston Back to School Community Fair,” said Pastor Wallace. “We look forward to this day of fun, information and connection that brings together families, friends and local businesses. Join us along with our community partners in an experience that displays what makes our community so special!"

The church is working closely with DCP&P (Division of Child Protection and Permanency) to provide supplies for their children. The book bag drive is so the children may have a bag of their own to carry their things. They are asking the community to donate school supplies such as pens, color pencils, paper, headphones, diapers and wipes.

The fair promises to be a fun-filled day.  The event will provide DJ music, multiple bouncy houses, free face painting, food and other activities.

The Union County Health Department will be onsite to administer free flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. Students should bring medical and/or school records as they will also be able to get their school immunization shots.
