FLEMINGTON, NJ - After a tragic car accident that took the life of North Hunterdon High School Student Sophia DeTorres, an "All-Way Stop” is proposed  for the interesection of County Route 617 (Sydney Road), Hogback Road and Lower Landsdown Road in Franklin Township.

A formal request from Franklin Township was made to enhance roadway safety at the intersection of Route 617 (Sydney Road), Hogback Road, and Lower Landsdown Road. The Hunterdon County Board of
Commissioners are taking action to install an All-Way Stop.

After careful consideration by the Office of the Hunterdon County Engineer, a recommendation was made to implement a new traffic pattern to include an All-Way Stop at the intersection with an objective to create a safer road environment for drivers of all ages at this intersection. A Resolution outlining the proposed changes to this intersection is anticipated to be on the County Commissioner’s Agenda for September 3, 2024.

The recommendation is being made using criteria for installing All-Way Stops contained in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices as well as multiple engineering factors including sight distances, crash data, and the average age and respective driving experience of individuals involved in accidents at this location were evaluated by the Office of the Hunterdon County Engineer.

Commissioner Director Jeff Kuhl shared in closing, “The loss of such a young life is a tragedy that affects our entire community. Our goal is to create a safer environment for all road users, especially our young drivers who frequently use this intersection.”

Sadly, it takes someone to lose their life. The township should’ve known that that was a dangerous intersection all these years. Something would’ve been done a long time ago. This would have never happened.
