SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – A cybersecurity breach a few months ago has left residents vulnerable to identity theft and compromised credit, according to an announcement by the Sparta Police Department.  The breach was not limited to Sussex County but affects people globally.

According to an announcement by the Sparta Police, “a large amount of sensitive data has been uploaded to the dark web.” It appears to primarily affect anyone who applied for credit between the 1990s and early 2000s.

A free tool is available to safely check whether your information has been compromised. According to the Sparta Police Department, cybersecurity firm Pentester has “harvested this dark-web data and made it available to review."

People can check the Pentester website to see if their personal information was part of the data breach.

Police suggest being proactive in protecting personal identity and credit by taking advantage of an offer by the three major credit reporting agencies to “freeze” your credit. This option is free and can help prevent unauthorized use of your credit.
