MONTCLAIR, NJ - In a recent press release, Mayor Renee  Baskerville highlighted the importance of the Red, Black, and Green flag, also known as the Pan-African or Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) flag, as a potent symbol of freedom and the long-standing journey of African Americans towards justice and equality. The flag serves as a global representation of the struggle for educational, economic, health, and social equity that African Americans continue to face.

Mayor Baskerville emphasized the significance of the flag during a time when the richness of American diversity, particularly the contributions of people of color, is increasingly under threat from anti-democratic forces. The mayor pointed out that U.S. history courses often focus on the perspectives of colonizers, neglecting the essential history and cultural contributions of African Americans. She underscored the need for educational equity by preserving African American traditions and teaching Black history as a fundamental part of understanding the broader history of America.

In light of this, Mayor Baskerville suggested that the Township of Montclair could further promote diversity and inclusion by organizing an essay contest for junior high and high school students. The contest would focus on the importance of flying diversity flags, such as the Pan-African flag, in communities like Montclair, which celebrate diversity and actively work towards becoming a model of inclusivity.

This initiative aligns with the township's ongoing efforts to foster a community that acknowledges and honors the cultural diversity of its residents. By encouraging educational programs and public displays of cultural symbols, Montclair continues to take affirmative steps towards building a more inclusive and equitable society.

The Township of Montclair will keep residents informed with updates regarding this and other initiatives from Mayor Baskerville through its official website: [https://www.montclairnjusa.org]
