HACKENSACK, NJ - There is a call for new marching band uniforms, with one parent who is also a district teacher, saying the band has grown from 12 students to 75 in just three years and not all the kids have uniforms to perform.

"We now have more marching band members than we have band uniforms," said parent and district teacher Stacey Wilkins. "Our current uniforms are over 12 years old and have served their purpose."

There was no mention of the cost of new uniforms.

"Our marching band is a reflection of our district," Wilkins said. "They represent Hackensack wherever they go, not just at our football games and Thanksgiving Day parades but at competitions, and we have even performed at the New York Jets football game. Our marching band students worked so hard to sound great and represent Hackensack, the best way they can, [and] they should also look good doing it."

"The public sees our band before they even hear us play a note," Wilkins said. "First impressions are lasting impressions and a band that performs with all of their members not in uniform does not give a good impression of Hackensack. They are amazing. Musicianship will get lost in the mix because they do not look the part. Our marching band is doing their part, and now they need the district to do theirs and provide them with new uniforms."

One board trustee said she thought the band was getting uniforms "every two years or so."

"I know this board here is in full agreement of getting the uniforms, as well as our superintendent, so our kids will look sharp, they will go out there and represent the Comets, the blue and gold that we are," the same board member said.
