SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – Scotch Plains-Fanwood improved to 2-0 in the young season by defeating Union City, 4-0, at Shimme Wexler Field on Saturday, Sept. 7.
In their first two games, the Raiders have scored nine goals while denying their opponents from getting on the scoreboard. Jack Sponheimer, Devin Pearce, Jayvon Young, and Samuel Valera all found the back of the net. Luca Passucci had two assists, while Sam Lindell and Bradley Pearce had one assist each. Shawn Guzman earned the clean sheet for the home team.
The Raiders put pressure on three different Union City goalies: Diego Guillin, Lucas Oyarzun, and Jeff Vergara throughout the game and used speed to create scoring chances. Young, who scored a goal, had several breakaway chances, thanks to solid work by the Raiders' defenders and midfielders.
“We're waiting for the right moment to find guys that are isolated one-on-one. Obviously, Jayvon's strength is when he has a little time and space and and running at defenders,” said Coach Alex Passucci. “It takes a team effort to create those moments."
While the Raiders have gotten off to a good start, Coach Passucci doesn't want his players to rest on their laurels. He knows they have a lot of work to do if they want this to be a special season. A big test will come on Monday at 4:30 p.m. when Scotch Plains-Fanwood, No. 16, will take on No. 10 Montclair at home.
“We have to just be solid on both sides of the ball,” the coach said. “We know that they're a solid team and a good program, but we're going to play our game and continue to build on what we've done so far.”
