MILLBURN, NJ – Before school began last week, Michael Skara, Director of Technology of Millburn Public Schools demonstrated the township’s newest security device. He explained, “The purpose of using this tool is to keep our students and staff as safe as we possibly can. We already have security cameras. We already have SROs [School Resource Officers] on campus. We already have a lockdown button.” Skara continued, “This is another tool in our toolbox to help keep our campuses safe. So, every visitor will be required to possess a state issued ID to get into our schools, just as they have previously.”

He said that there is an iPad at each check in location of each of the schools, and the system requires a one-time check in. First, the visitor clicks on “check in” and has her/his photo taken. Second, the visitor holds up a state issued ID (driver’s license, etc.) and clicks “take photo” and turns over the state ID to take a photo of the back. The system asks what your destination is -- classroom, front office, guidance, nurse or school event. Finally, it inquires if you’re a parent, guardian, family member or vendor. Once the ID is approved, the mini, wireless printer will generate a paper badge to affix to your shirt.

If someone visits more than one building, they still only need to check in one time. After the initial registration at any of the school buildings, facial recognition confirms the visitor’s identity during future visits.

Skara concluded, “When leaving the school, visitors check out using the badge. Just hit check out rather than check in.”
