PISCATAWAY, NJ – Excessive summer heat forced Piscataway police to move the township’s annual National Night Out (NNO) event from August to September when hundreds of area families came out to attend the annual street fair-style festival on Tuesday, a much cooler, clear evening.

Although it was a school night, residents and visitors crowded along Stockton Street and Buena Vista Avenue behind the community center for the evening event where township police officers and firefighters were on hand to pose for pictures and answer questions about their roles, and provide information about fighting crime and preventing fires in area neighborhoods.

Visitors lined up to sit inside a police car and fire trucks, and climbed up the ladder to see inside a high-water rescue vehicle as officers explained the equipment used in traffic stops and while fighting fires and rescuing trapped victims.

Children lined up to test their rock-climbing skills while a DJ spun hit records that many attendees danced to before alumni members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. performed a step show on the main stage, showcasing their coordinated percussive dance moves and hand claps.

Various vendors and community and church groups setup information and food booths including the Girl Scouts, the Elks, the Piscataway Library, and volunteers with the Piscataway Senior Center, Public Relations Advisory Commission and other township agencies.

And Piscataway Police officers served up freshly popped popcorn while Hell-on-Wheels, a traveling BMX bicycle stunt team performed daredevil tricks on their ramps, including a high-flying jump over the head of Detective Calvin Laughlin, a coordinator of the annual NNO event.

According to their website , National Night Out was established in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch and “is celebrated by millions of neighbors across thousands of communities the first Tuesday in August. It enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.”
