As the final seconds ticked off on the scoreboard at Schools Stadium, in Newark, a number of Bloomfield High football players were happy to celebrate the team's first win, on Sept. 20, but some also noted that the team needed to cut back on turnovers, if the rest of the season can meet the team's expectations.

Bloomfield scored the game's lone touchdown in the final seconds of regulation time, and defeated Barringer, 6-0. The win improved the Bengals record to 1-3 while Barringer fell to 0-3. The Bengals are back in action on Sept. 26, with a visit to Jersey City to take on Lincoln High. Kickoff time is 7 p.m.

The Bengals' next home game is set for Oct. 4, when East Orange Campus visits, in a 6:30 p.m. game. A week later, Oct. 11, Bloomfield plays its final regular season home game, when Paterson Kennedy comes to Foley Field, also at 6:30 p.m. Bloomfield's final two regular season games are at Livingston (Oct. 18) and West Orange (Oct. 25).

While it was a low-scoring game with Barringer, the Bengals had numerous chances to score more points, but penalties and turnovers did hurt the team.

Nevertheless, Bloomfield head coach Mike Carter was pleased with the win, and noted his team's resiliency, especially in a road game.

"You found a way, and that was important," Carter said to his team after the game. "We knew this would be a tough game. Barringer has some talented players, and they play a hard and physical game. We got the job done."

Bloomfield quarterback Jeremy Tejada guided the Bengals to the game's only touchdown in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter. He completed a key pass to James Fields, who was back in the lineup after an injury in the season opener, at Newark Central. Anthony Pope had a few important gains and Aaron Varner came through with a big gain to set up the eventual score.

The Bengals did pick up 113 yards on the ground, with Tejada rushing for 43, Pope, 32 and Varner 17 to lead the way. Tejada also threw for 80 yards, with Christian Cradle picking up 35 yards in receptions.

There were a lot of penalties, against both teams, and turnovers were there, on both sides, including fumbles lost and interceptions.

On defense, Ukoha Kalu and Mekhi Field had interceptions for Bloomfield, and the Bengals defense received solid efforts by Jo'elle Urdanivia, Tyler Frantantoni and DJ Coltenback.

After the game, Carter presented a game ball to Pope, who turned in a solid effort on both sides of the ball.
