PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - Senior wide receiver and three-year starter Matthew Scerbo Jr. broke one all-time Phillipsburg High School football record and tied another when the Stateliners fell to host Ridge, 28-21, on Friday night after catching three passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns in the game.

He broke Mike Lelko’s record for career receptions and now has 95 on his trek to become the school’s first 100-catch receiver. His two TDs tied Jim Clymer’s record of 17 and he’s 263 yards away from Clymer for most receiving yards.

“Matt has always been consistent and reliable,” Stateliner coach Frank Duffy said. “That reflects in his career stats that continue to grow. You can always expect him to make a big play. Ridge double-teamed him the majority of the game which is rare for a high school team because it leaves your defense vulnerable in other places. It shows you the level of respect teams have for Matt.”

This is Scerbo Jr.’s third recognition of Iron Strong Athlete of the Week.

Honorable Mention – Jessica Bonilla, Marissa Kozak, Alessandra Tolentino (tennis); Jett Genovese, Felix Matos (football); Aniya Gerdes, Suwebo Jawula, Maddie Tate (soccer); Mike James, Wayne Maresch, Cael Troxell (soccer); Caitlin Jansen, Ray-anah Brown-Smith (volleyball); Jackie Miller, Jordan Nonnemacher, Sophia Remian (field hockey).
