METUCHEN, NJ - The Spotswood High School girls varsity soccer team won a big rivalry game under the lights at Metuchen High School on Tuesday. Spotswood defeated the Bulldogs 2-0 to take over first place in the Greater Middlesex Conference's White Division. Metuchen handed Spotswood its' only loss of the season in overtime earlier this month.
Erin Zavala buried a pass from Teagan Jones 30-yards out to score the lone goal of the first half for the Chargers. Dani Lyons converted a penalty kick 15 minutes into the second half to give Spotswood the insurance goal and a 2-0 lead. Spotswood's defense turned in a clean scoresheet for the fifth time this season. Isabella Mele made 10 saves in goal to earn the shutout. Julianna Castalanos made six saves for Metuchen.
Spotswood's victory improves the Chargers overall season record to 7-1. This is the Chargers first season in the White Division after winning back-to-back Blue Division championships.
Spotswood returns to action on Saturday when the team takes part in Soccer for a Cause at Metuchen High School along with 22 Middlesex County girls high school teams. The Chargers are raising money for Go4theGoal. Go4theGoal helps children and their families who are battling cancer. Spotswood's opponent is Old Bridge High School. Old Bridge is 6-2 this season. Game time is at 4 p.m. at Metuchen High School.
