HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Wood-Ridge thwarted a Hasbrouck Heights second-half comeback, 4-3, when local rivals met at Hitchcock Field on Tuesday afternoon in a NJIC Meadowlands Division boys soccer match. Wood-Ridge improved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Meadowlands with the win. Hasbrouck Heights falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Meadowlands
Wood-Ridge held a 2-0 lead at halftime behind the goals of Jordan Cano-Alzate and Anthony Cala.
Hasbrouck Heights chipped away at that lead with Chihiro Suenaga scored first for the Aviators in the second half, converting on a pass from Sebastian Broncano. About one minute later, Wood-Ridge's Mateo Garrido scored to make the score, 3-1.
Hasbrouck Heights tied the game behind goals from Broncano and Evan Maloney.
Wood-Ridge broke the tie when the ball rebounded off Hasbrouck Heights goalkeeper Lucas Cappazzolo and into the net, after the ball was centered in front of the net.
“They're a formidable team and we knew that coming in,” said Wood-Ridge head coach Alberico De Pierro. “We knew we were going to have to play the entire game like Becton .”
“That's why these guys are really good, because they never stopped….three goals to get back in the second half," he continued. "This is a massive rivalry win because they're actually that good. We knew that they were that good, and it required our best effort.”
“I'm so proud of these guys because, psychologically, when you lose two leads, and we're away, and you find a way to win, that's a strong mental team.”
Next up for Wood-Ridge is “another challenge” said De Pierro hosting undefeated Leonia at the Wood-Ridge Athletic Complex on Saturday at 4 p.m.
“We'll enjoy this one and get back to work tomorrow,” he added.
Hasbrouck Heights returns to action on Monday, September 30 at North Arlington at 6 p.m.
