ST. BONAVENTURE, NY — Adrian Wojnarowski made his first official on-campus appearance as general manager of the university men’s basketball team Wednesday.

“I could be anywhere in the basketball world today, and I choose to be at St. Bonaventure University,” Wojnarowski said while fighting through tears during an introductory press conference at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

Vice President and Director of Athletics Bob Beretta and men’s basketball head coach Mark Schmidt took part in the press conference with Wojnarowski.

Wojnarowski, who graduated from St. Bonaventure in 1991, announced his retirement as ESPN’s NBA insider Sept. 18. That same day, he announced his acceptance of the general manager position at St. Bonaventure.

“I’m going to try to bring relationships with people,” Wojnarowski said. “Being able to sell this program and sell our history, it’s appealing to a lot of players.”

Schmidt was quick to weigh in on Wojnarowski’s benefit for St. Bonaventure.

“Guys, we got Woj,” he said. “If Woj put his name in the portal, there would be Kansas, Carolina, Duke. This is a grand slam… The relationships that Woj has we couldn’t develop in the next 50 years. What he’s going to bring to the program… I can’t put it into words.”

Wojnarowski told the assembled media what accepting the job felt like and why he made the decision to come back.

“I thought about what I was gaining,” he said. “And I thought about being back here and being able to serve coach, and Bob, and our players and our University. I gained in this deal. I’m the winner in this deal.”
