FAIRFIELD, NJ – Mayor William Galese commended Fairfield Chief of Police Anthony Manna at Monday’s Township Council meeting on his coordination of the funeral of Det. James Ciampi.

Manna is asking the township to keep the blue ribbons up for what would have been Ciampi’s 32 birthday on Oct. 21. Ribbons should be taken down on Oct. 22.

An ordinance was passed that amends the residential zone overlay (RZO-1). This ordinance limits residential development.

A resident of Fairfield Court addressed the council about this ordinance since she received a letter informing her that her property would be affected by this zone change. Business Administrator James Gasparini assured her that this ordinance curtails building near her property.

The council is proposing a resolution urging an amendment of the New Jersey Bail Reform Act to strengthen the criteria for pretrial confinement for certain criminal defendants. The council listened to Manna’s report at the August council meeting explaining that criminals were being set free to commit the same crimes, or worse, over again. He suggested bail reform. Galese encouraged communities in the West Essex area to adopt a similar resolution.

Councilman Michael McGlynn invited residents to the Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department’s open house at 51 Plymouth Street on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
