    Newark Police Providing Extra Coverage After School Threat on Social Media

    NEWARK — A threat made toward  Newark schools has prompted additional police at their buildings on Thursday morning, the public safety director said.

    “Newark Police have been advised of a threat aimed at Newark Schools and posted on social media,” Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said in a statement. “Newark Police are providing additional coverage to schools and are working with its law enforcement partners and the Newark Board of Education.”

    An image posted to Instagram shows a hand holding a gun with the words “i promise you wont see me.” The image contains the date Sept. 26 and  references the schools “Newark Lab,” “Newark Collegiate” and “Central High School.”

    “District officials are aware of a social media post and are working collaboratively with law enforcement," Newark Public Schools spokesperson Paul Brubaker said. "Anyone with credible information should contact Newark Police Department.”

    The threat made on social media follows a series of similar threats directed toward schools in New Jersey after the Sept. 4 mass shooting at a high school in Georgia .

    In New Jersey, at least five students were arrested in connection with threats made against schools in Camden, Gloucester and Bergen counties in recent weeks, NJ Spotlight News reported .
