BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – Following some brief technical issues and having the wrong flag were corrected, The Berkeley Heights Diversity Council and the Township of Berkeley Heights held an abbreviated flag raising ceremony in front of Town Hall, prior to the Sep 24 Township Council Meeting. The ceremony commemorated Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and community.

The date of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries. It includes Independence Day celebrations from Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

Councilwoman Susan Poage introduced guest singer Kashika Sinha, who sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. The theme of the month, "Pioneers of Change, Shaping the Future Together," was emphasized, reflecting innovation, resilience, and unity within the Hispanic community.

The flag was raised by township employees and council members of Hispanic heritage, and the abbreviated meeting concluded with Poage reading a quote from Antonio Tierro, President and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, stressing the value of Hispanic perspectives. He spoke to all Hispanic people when he said, “You are not lucky to be here, the world needs your perspective. They are lucky to have you.”

Angus Chen from the Berkeley Heights Diversity Council announced an upcoming Hispanic Heritage celebration at the Berkeley Heights YMCA, to be held on Sunday, Oct 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event is a collaboration with the YMCA Diversity Council, Springfield Unity Project, and Providence Unity Project. In the spirit of giving back, attendees are encouraged to donate diapers (any size) to support the families served by El Centro Hispanoamericano, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides legal support and social services to low-income immigrants in Plainfield. The event will feature music, dancing, arts and crafts, and family-friendly activities.
