WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Local officials and developers broke ground on Wednesday, Sept 25th, for the new Cloverleaf Shopping Center on the site of this town’s historic Cloverleaf traffic circle at Route 35 and Route 1.

Mayor John E. McCormac and Robert G. Paulus, president of Wick Companies, LLC – the retail center’s developer – announced that Arizona-based Sprouts Farmers Market , an organic food and healthy grocery chain, has agreed to occupy its anchor store. Sprouts has nearly 400 supermarkets nationwide.

“ The Cloverleaf redevelopment project will transform this long vacant and underused site into a productive, commercially successful modern retail center that will offer upscale retail shopping and dining experiences,” Mayor McCormac said.

The shopping center is to open in mid-to-late 2025, officials said.

“ We are thrilled to have Sprouts, a terrific national organic farmer’s market, as the anchor tenant with multiple clothing retailers, restaurants and health-related businesses expressing interest in locating at this crossroads location,” the mayor said.

Cloverleaf Retail Center, at 1000 St. Georges Avenue, will offer 60,000-square-feet of store space, with Sprouts occupying its largest store.

Talks are reportedly underway with other national retailers, including an unnamed footwear chain; Loft Clothing; Mediterranean restaurant chain Cava Grill; Turning Point Apparel, Paris Baguette, Habit Burger and Duck Donuts, according to a prepared township statement.

The new shopping center is named for the nation’s first “cloverleaf intersection,” built in 1928, to facilitate traffic flow through Routes 1 and 35. It was being considered for the National Register of Historic Places in the early 2000s, before the state ended up replacing with a highway underpass.

Mayor McCormac offered kind words for Wick Companies, calling it “a wonderful corporate partner for our community.”

Wick built the Red Oak apartments, which replaced Stern Towers, and it is finishing the Green Oak complex to replace Olsen Towers that give “our seniors much better living conditions at no increase in rent,” the mayor said.

Joining Mayor McCormac and Robert Paulus for Wednesday’s announcement were Wick principals Tim and Daniel Paulus; Caroline Ehrlich, the local Redevelopment Agency’s executive director; Heather LaMotta, that agency’s deputy director; Marta Lefsky, township planning director; and council members Cory Spillar and Sharon McAuliffe.
