Somerset County Educator is NJ’s 2024 ‘Teacher-of-the Year’

MONTGOMERY, NJ — Social studies teacher Stefanie Lachenauer from Montgomery Upper Middle School has been named the 2024 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year, an honor bestowed by the N.J. Department of Education .

“ Stefanie Lachenauer is the kind of educator who cares for the whole student, from their academic growth to their emotional well-being,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a prepared statement: “The lessons she has imparted to her students have set them up for lifelong success.”

Stefanie Lachenauer has taught in the Montgomery Township School District for 18 years, and is known for encouraging youngsters to be global citizens, to think globally and act locally.

As New Jersey’s new “Teacher of the Year,” Lachenauer will represent her community and the state at national and statewide professional, business, education, civic, and parent–student events.

She is already scheduled to attend several national education events and conferences, and she will meet the US President at the White House later this year.

The choice puts her in the running for the National Teacher of the Year program, the oldest and most prestigious honors program to focus public attention on teaching excellence in teaching. Finalists will be named in this winter.

In Middlesex County, the NJ Department of Education named Carteret Middle School social studies teacher Kristen L. Johnson as 2024-25 “Teacher of the Year.”

Last year, the state chose Carteret grade school teacher Leana Malinowsky, from the borough’s Pvt. Nicholas Minue School, as Middlesex County’s “Teacher of the Year.”
