PATERSON, NJ - Paterson's Straight Street, between 20th and 21st Avenue, has been renamed "Peter Tirri Way" in honor of the lifelong Paterson resident and education advocate Peter Tirri. The renaming recognizes Tirri’s decades of dedication to the Paterson public school system and his steadfast commitment to students, teachers, and support staff.

“I’m truly embarrassed, but grateful for this honor," Tirri said, giving credit to his wife, Fran, who he said has always supported and allowed him time to “do what (he did).”

“I’ve worked in the Paterson school district for 30, maybe 40 years, starting at School 5, and I loved every moment,” Tirri reflected. "From School 12 to here, I’ve been lucky to work with incredible people. The teachers, staff, and everyone who shows up day in and day out make this tough job worth it. I can’t take full credit—this has always been a team effort. I am so proud to have served with each of you.”

A product of Paterson’s public schools, Tirri began his educational journey at School No. 5 and graduated from Central High School. He went on to become a well-respected educator, teaching eighth grade at the Martin Luther King School and serving as a math teacher at School 12. His career was defined by his tireless advocacy for public education, and he held leadership roles such as president of the Paterson Education Association (PEA) and member of the NJEA Urban Education Committee.

Under Tirri’s leadership, the PEA grew into a powerful advocate for fair wages, improved working conditions, and enhanced education for the Paterson community. His efforts earned him numerous accolades, including the NJEA's Silver Scissors Award and the Mayor's Unsung Hero Award in 2010. His contributions extended far beyond the bargaining table, with countless educators and students benefiting from his advocacy and guidance.

“We’re here to honor a man who poured his heart and soul into the Paterson Public School District," Mayor Andre Sayegh said. "He grew up near historic Hinchliffe Stadium, graduated from School 5, and later attended Central High. Pete spent years advocating for teachers and students at 445 Straight Street, which after today will be known as Peter Tirri Way. He always had his way, and today is no exception.”

Current PEA President John McEntee paid tribute to Tirri, describing him as a "pillar of strength" and "beacon of hope" who worked tirelessly for over four decades to improve the city's schools. McEntee emphasized the profound impact Tirri had on both the PEA and the larger Paterson community, stating that his legacy would live on through the renamed street and the countless lives he touched.

“Pete Tirri, you empowered teachers, and that’s something I’m deeply grateful for,” Fifth Ward Councilman Luis Velez said. "My daughter has a profession today, and my son is a cop in Orlando, all because of the work you did. You paved the way for us, and we honor your legacy. I’ve always stood with the teachers of this city, especially with 12 public schools in my ward, and I’ll continue to advocate for them. Thank you for everything, Pete. You empowered teachers, and that’s a legacy we’ll carry forward every day."

“Looking up the meaning of 'Tirri' brings to mind qualities like cleverness, eloquence, and integrity," Councilwoman-at-Large Lilisa Mimms said. "When it came to city council decisions on contracts, fair wages, and ensuring qualified teachers in classrooms, it was a no-brainer. You've trained us well, and because of you, thousands of us are great, educated, and highly qualified teachers today. Thank you for your unwavering commitment and the legacy you've imparted to all of us. We appreciate you and are glad to celebrate your accomplishments while you can still enjoy them. Congratulations, it's well-deserved.”

Former students, teachers, and community members gathered to celebrate Tirri’s legacy. His influence on Paterson’s education system was evident, with many sharing personal stories of how Tirri mentored and supported them throughout his career.

“When we worked together, you were always strong, very direct, but most importantly, honest,” Superintendent of Paterson Public Schools Dr. Laurie Newell said. “During our many negotiations, it was clear your heart and soul were dedicated to representing everyone under your care, and you did it with tremendous honor. On behalf of Paterson Public Schools and my predecessor, Eileen Shafer, we are so proud to have this street named Pete Tirri Way. It represents all of your hard work, passion, and dedication. We love you, we honor you, and we thank you for your service.”

“He grew up in Paterson, graduating from School 5, School 12, and Central High, never imagining he'd have a street named after him, especially after getting a D in self-control,” Vince Tirri, Peter Tirri's son said. “Through years of tough negotiations, he always worked with honesty and dedication, representing teachers and students with passion. Special thanks to my mom for standing by him through it all. Dad, we're so proud of you.”
