    HS Football: Butler Defeats Hasbrouck Heights, 34-6

    HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ – Luca Toriellos’ 45 yard interception return changed the momentum of the game, giving Butler a 13-0 lead going into halftime en route to a 34-6 victory over Hasbrouck Heights in a NJIC Meadowlands Division football game.

    Butler now sits at 4-0, in first place in the Meadowlands Division, while Hasbrouck Heights falls to 2-2 on the season and in the Meadowlands. Butler plays New Milford, currently 3-0 (who plays Saddle Brook on Saturday), next week for sole possession of first place.

    Butler scored on their first possession against Hasbrouck Heights, after shutting down the Aviators on a quick three and out. PJ Coffey and Matt Baril combined for 24 yards to put the ball at the Aviator 27. David Smith hit Michael Henehan with a pass for 17 yards to put them inside the five. Two plays later, Smith ran in from one yard out for a 6-0 lead. Coffey’s kick was wide right.

    After that initial score, the rest of the half became a punt fest, and each team’s defense shut down the opposing offense. But on second-and-13, Toriello intercepted Hasbrouck Heights Daniel Amendola’s screen pass, and rambled 45 yards for a touchdown, giving Butler a 12-0 lead. Coffey’s kick was good, extending the lead to 13-0.

    Butler received the opening kickoff and marched down the field, scoring on a quick four-play drive, capped off by Coffey catching a 32-yard touchdown pass from Smith for a 20-0 lead.

    The Aviators' offense was shut down on its first possession of the second half, punting after a three-and-out. Butler’s offense bounced right back, with Coffey capping off a 14-play drive with a 5-yard run. His kick made the score 27-0.

    Hasbrouck Heights offense was finally able to get something moving, scoring on a 14-play drive, aided by a personal foul on a fourth down run. Jake Summers capped off the drive with a three-yard plunge for a touchdown to cut the lead to 27-6. The point-after was blocked.

    Butler scored its final touchdown on the next drive, with Smith hooking up with Peter Calvi on a 22-yard pass-play for a 33-6 lead. Coffey made his fourth extra point of the game for a 34-6 lead.
