BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Governor Livingston High School celebrated Spirit Week the week of September 16, in anticipation for the annual Friday Night Lights football game on September 20.
The Highlanders kicked off Spirit Week on Monday with Pajama Day. Students took advantage of this opportunity to show up to school in their pajamas and stay comfy all day long.
“I like pajama day because it gives me a chance to be comfortable at school,” freshman Bridget Whelan said.
The day also coincided with Senior Sunrise, so the seniors were able to arrive early for the sunrise with little prep to their wardrobe.
Tuesday, September 17, was Twin Day. Students and their friends wore matching outfits to look as much like other students as they could, while some even coordinated with their actual twins. Though they aren’t really twins, freshmen Ally Gardner and Charlotte Keenan found some clothes with the school logo and colors that they already had at home to match with each other.
Wednesday was Hawaiian Day and students and teachers wore clothes fit for a vacation in the tropics. Art teacher Michelle Harpster opted to wear a blue Hawaiian shirt that belonged to her brother. “I have these really cute vintage dresses that work when the weather's warm, but it's not today,” Harpster said.
The hallways in the school resembled a golf course and the rodeo on Thursday, September 19, for the theme Country vs. Country Club. Students and teachers dressed in country club preppy outfits or in Western wear. Samantha Carney, English teacher, dressed up as a member of a country club. “It’s cool that there are two options to go as, and see who’s leaning more towards country club versus who’s leaning more towards country,” Carney said.
For the last day of Spirit Week, Friday, September 20, students wore their class colors in anticipation of the Pep Rally at the end of the school day and for the Friday Night Lights game later that night. Seniors wore blue, juniors wore red, sophomores wore white and the freshmen wore black.
Senior Alex Kasper, Executive Board Vice President, said, “I think [the pep rally] was really good to show everyone having that school spirit. I loved seeing everyone cheering for their grade and their friends.”
Ending the spirit-filled week with a pep rally to hype everyone up for the football game, gave students a chance to participate in grade level competitions and show off their Highlander pride.
"At the end of the day I think that just having fun mattered the most to everyone," Kasper said.
