Athlete Spotlight : Yorktown's Annie Durante

YORKTOWN, N.Y.—Yorktown’s Annie Durante is one of the Huskers’ four senior field hockey captains, along with Brie Gaccino, Norah Guss, and Clare Ryan.

Durante, a goalie, is coming off a season where she was named All-Section Honorable Mention and All-League in 2023. She has been playing varsity field hockey since being an end-of-season call-up from the JV at the end of her sophomore year.

In the spring, Durante also plans to play Yorktown’s girls varsity lacrosse team for a fourth season.

How old were you when you started playing field hockey and what got you started?

I was in my freshman year of high school when I started playing field hockey and started (playing) goalie right away. My friends were all doing field hockey as their fall sport so I decided to tag along and that is why I started playing it.

What is your favorite thing about being on the Yorktown field hockey team?

It’s that I get to constantly grow and make so many memories with this wonderful community.

What is your favorite team activity or pre- or post-game ritual?

I love having a team bonding before games, because it’s a time when the team gets to connect on a bit of a deeper note before a game.

Who has been your biggest role model?

It has probably been my dad, just because he has pushed me to always exceed at everything in life by simply believing in me.

Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know.

I have been singing the national anthem for my teams on senior night since sophomore year.

What do you plan to do after high school ?

I plan to go to Drew University to play lacrosse and hopefully find my passions (concerning her future career) there as well.

What’s your favorite sports team?

The Giants.

What is your favorite music to listen to while warming up for a game?

I love listening to hard rock before a game to get me pumped up.

If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go?

Australia—but during our winter season because it is summer there at that time.

How would you advise a young athlete thinking of trying out for the Yorktown field hockey team?

I would say do it because you truly have nothing to lose. While you are on this team, you will always have so many opportunities to grow and learn new things with amazing coaches all throughout the program.

You will hopefully, like I have, gain a new family and form new friendships throughout the process.
