SPRINGFIELD, NJ – The township has committed to the longterm project of upgrading the Joanna Way pumping station, a decision that Springfield administrator John Bussiculo said had to be made before the end of this year.

“We had to commit because we had the money that was granted to us by the government, and there was a date on that, that if we didn't have it encumbered by (that date), we would end up losing it,” said Bussiculo, referring to the Dec. 31, 2024 to dedicate grant money to a specific project. “That's why we wanted to push ahead and make sure that the money was encumbered, (so) we are assured of being able to use it for our sewers.”

Bussiculo said at last Tuesday's Township Committee meeting that the pumping station has not been upgraded in decades.

“That station basically hasn't been touched in 40 years. We're looking at close to $1 million, and the biggest holdup, quite frankly, is the pumps and the motors,” he said. “We're looking at at least 40 weeks for the lead time.”

Earlier this year, the township received $1.8 million in grant money, all of which will go toward improvements to all the pumping stations in Springfield, beginning with Joanne Way.

Mayor Chris Weber said earlier in the summer that the Joanne Way station handles the low-lying areas of the township most vulnerable to flooding.
