WARREN COUNTY, NJ - Wagging Tails, Strong Hearts, this Dog Walk brought it all, as well as comfort to survivors, supporters and their fur friendly companions in Warren County. The damp morning air was filled with a little mist, but plenty barks, tail wags, and the energy of dozens of dogs and their humans at Meadow Breeze Park in Washington, NJ, this past Saturday, September 28, 2024.

The " Walking Side by Side, Caring for Our Companions, and Educating to End Violence " event, hosted by the Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Crisis Center (DASACC), united survivors of domestic violence and their loyal pets. This event also brought dog lovers throughout the county with their best friends and the role they play in their lives. Every pet owner had a story to tell, including your TAPinto publisher for Phillipsburg who participated with two furry friends in tow.

    Why Dogs Walk for Survivors
"Why a dog walk?" you might ask. According to Sonia Ron of DASACC, "We accompany people on different journeys." For many survivors of domestic violence, pets are part of that journey she told us in her opening.  In fact, 71% of survivors report threats to their pets as part of the cycle of abuse, often making them hesitant to leave their homes out of fear for their animal companions. DASACC is one of the few agencies nationwide offering a pet-friendly shelter and kennel, ensuring no one has to choose between safety and their beloved pet. Ron kicked off the event, which has reminders throughout the course of statistics surrounding domestic violence and pets are a part of the story.

    Woofing Together for Change
The day kicked off with a scenic 1.5-mile walk through Meadow Breeze Park, where paws hit the ground in solidarity with survivors. The walk wasn’t just for exercise—but it did give us plenty of it. We chose to do walk both courses. Dogs of all shapes and sizes earned their “Pup Cups” and completion medals, while doggie treats and crafts kept tails wagging throughout the morning.

Live music provided by the School of Rock set the tone, playing Metallica. As pups lounged in the grass, chased balls, and sniffed out new friends, their humans learned more about DASACC's critical services available in the community.

    Partners in the Paw-ssion
The event wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of its sponsors: EAB Insurance Group, Hackettstown Rotary Club, Phillipsburg Rotary Club, Visions Federal Credit Union, Washington Animal Hospital, School of Rock Randolph, and Lorez J. Gomez-Rivera Esquire.

    DASACC’s Unique Pet-Friendly Services
DASACC recognizes the importance of pets in the lives of survivors. Their state-of-the-art shelter features a climate-controlled kennel, allowing survivors to bring their pets along while they stay in the seven-bedroom facility. Additionally, the shelter offers pet visits, vaccinations, and essential services to ensure pets are cared for as survivors begin their journey toward healing.

DASACC's unique programs aim to break this cycle by providing both survivors and their pets with a safe haven. Their outreach includes specialized training on topics like "Pets & Domestic Violence" and “Identifying & Responding to Interpersonal Violence,” empowering people to stand up against abuse.

    A Gallery of Furry Faces
We captured a photo gallery from the event, which we hope inspires others to join in for next year and support the DASACC . From Chihuahuas to Great Danes, the diversity of pups on parade brought smiles to all. Each dog had a unique story, just like their humans, and it was clear that every furry friend played a vital role in their companion’s emotional well-being. Many, such as mine were rescue dogs with their own heartwarming stories. JLB Snap Photography was onsite to capture the fun for TAPinto Phillipsburg. You can view the full gallery here for additional event photos.

Tail Wags to Join the Cause
DASACC’s work doesn’t stop with one event. Whether for a pet-friendly shelters, clothing boutiques like the Wardrobe of Hope, or educational workshops, the organization continues to offer vital services to survivors of domestic violence. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, DASACC’s 24/7 helpline (908-453-4181) is available for support.

Together, by walking side by side and caring for our companions, we can educate our community and end violence for both people and their pets. Bark bark bark, woof woof woof, and wag wag wag —we can’t wait for next year!
