Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS Senior Mac Bastable Enters His Second Year as BOE Student Rep

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS senior Mac Bastable is now in his second year of serving as a student representative for the SPF student body on the district’s Board of Education. Initially serving as the BOE’s junior representative, Bastable advanced his role to being the senior representative for the 2024-25 school year.

“As a student representative to the Board of Education, I provide insight [from] the perspective of a current high school student, [allowing for] the consideration of student input in decision-making processes that directly impact our educational environment,” Bastable told TAPinto .

Bastable initially applied for the position in June 2023 with passion and dedication to make a positive impact on the school district. His school involvement as an officer for the Student Government Association and being a part of the high school’s theater cast since his freshman year prepared him to take on the ambitious student representative role. This year, he plans to improve the district’s environment by creating an inclusive community for students.

“On the Board of Education, I serve as a voice for the student body and can communicate directly with the BOE, [addressing] the wants and needs of high school students,” he said.

So far, Bastable has learned the true impacts of ensuring that students’ concerns are heard and fostering greater student engagement in district decision-making. While he is not planning on pursuing a career in politics or education in college, he will apply his experiences as an SPF student representative in his walk through life as he collaborates with individuals in the future.

He is looking forward to working with the new 2024-2025 junior student representative who will be taking on his previous role. Since being elected, he recalls a memorable experience when collaborating with the previous 2023-24 senior representative.

“Sairah Llano was very helpful in showing me the ropes of being on the Board of Education,” Bastable said.

Bastable’s work as the senior Board of Education student representative will be honored at his graduation ceremony in June, when he is presented before the student body.
