LIVINGSTON, NJ — In recognition of the 125 th anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) — which was founded in 1899 by a small group of veterans who banded together upon their return from campaigns abroad to advocate on behalf of all veterans — the Livingston Township Council recently declared Sept. 29 as VFW Day in the Township of Livingston and presented members of Livingston’s VFW Post 2856 with a proclamation in honor of their contributions to the community and country.

“We hereby stand with the VFW to ensure veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned entitlements and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of this great country,” said Mayor Al Anthony as he read from the township’s proclamation, which also states that it was issued “in honor of the VFW’s invaluable contributions to the veteran community in Livingston and around the world.”

According to the proclamation, the mission of the VFW is to “foster camaraderie among the United States veterans of overseas conflicts, to serve our veterans, the military and our communities, and to advocate on behalf of all veterans.”

It also recognizes that since the VFW’s inception, the nonprofit veterans service organization — which is comprised of eligible veterans and military service members from the active guard and reserve forces — has been instrumental in “the establishment of the Veterans Administration, the National Cemetery System and the creation of every National Veterans Memorial.”

“The VFW has played a vital role in virtually every significant piece of veterans’ legislation passed in the 20 th and 21 st centuries, including the Honoring our Pact Act, the most significant expansion of veterans benefits in history,” the proclamation reads.

Members of the Livingston VFW chapter thanked the council members and other community members who continue to support their mission to “remember the dead by helping the living.”

Community members were also asked to remember and pray for service members who are currently “in harm’s way,” including many New Jersey National Guard members serving in either Syria, Iraq and elsewhere.
