GLEN RIDGE, NJ - The Montclair Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident that resulted in “one of the cars traveling 75 feet off the road and crashing through a home”, said Montclair fire officials.

On Sunday, September 29, at approximately 10:25 a.m., emergency crews from the Montclair Fire Department, Glen Ridge Police, and Glen Ridge EMS responded to a motor vehicle accident in Glen Ridge that involved a vehicle crashing through the side of a nearby home.

Upon arrival, Montclair fire department personnel assessed the situation and determined that the impact had compromised the structural integrity of the home. To prevent further damage or potential collapse, they installed a "T" shore to support the building.

According to Montclair Fire officials, the driver of the vehicle, despite the severity of the crash, was evaluated by Glen Ridge EMS. They said, “Fortunately, they were not injured and refused medical treatment.”

Incidents like this demonstrate the need for specialized training in technical rescues, including responses to potential structural collapses. The Montclair Fire Department emphasized the high risks such emergencies pose not only to civilians but also to the rescuers themselves. Regular, in-depth training is essential to ensure these situations are handled safely and effectively.

They added, “Our members are trained and equipped to handle several types of technical rescues, including structural collapse. These types of emergencies often present extremely high risk to the civilians involved as well as the rescuers. Being able to address these incidents safely and effectively requires our members to take part in regular in-depth training sessions.”

“We are always working to hone our skills and expand our capabilities to ensure that all we serve receive the best in emergency response from the Montclair Fire Department,” fire officials concluded.
