Rahway Kindergarteners Dive into the World of Apples

RAHWAY, NJ — Ms.  Contreras’s kindergarten class at Roosevelt Elementary School recently concluded a week-long exploration of apples, a popular fall fruit!

Throughout the week, students delved into the fascinating world of apples, learning about their parts, life cycle, and the journey from orchard to home. They discovered the difference between the stem, skin, flesh, core, and seeds, and traced the apple's growth from blossom to ripe fruit. Students also explored the concept of seasons, understanding how apple trees thrive in different climates and how their growth is influenced by the changing weather.

The week culminated in an exciting apple investigation. Students closely observed apples of various sizes and colors, measuring their height, width, and weight using rulers and scales. They then made predictions about whether apples would sink or float in water, based on their observations and understanding of density. The hands-on activity provided a fun and engaging way for students to apply their newfound knowledge and develop critical thinking skills.

Ms. Contreras expressed her enthusiasm for the students’ learning. “I was so impressed with the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the week," she said. "They were eager to learn about apples and actively participated in all the activities. Their excitement was contagious, and it made teaching this unit a joy.”
