RANDOLPH, NJ- After a 12-4 season in the Fall of 2022, the Randolph girls tennis team slipped' up in 2023 and endured a challenging year with a losing record. However, with a senior heavy group in 2024, the Lady Rams are back on the winning track – having compiled a record of 9-4 so far this season. ( Link to photos at end of story )
“The tough season we had last year motivated us to come back ready and motivated this year,” said captain Noelle Thompson. “The success that we are experiencing this season has created an entirely new energy on the team. We come to each match with new confidence and determination. It is so fulfilling to see our hard work in the off-season pay off on the court and allow us to compete with tough opponents.”
Things clicked right from the get-go for Randolph, as they ran off four straight wins to open the year over Mt. Olive, Morris Knolls, Morris Hills, and Pope John.
A tough stretch followed that with a 1-3 record over their next four matches, falling to Morristown, Par Hills, and West Morris while besting Roxbury. But they rebounded and got back on track to go 3-1 in the next four – defeating Madison, Morris Knolls, and Pope John while falling to Mendham as they then turned their attention to the state playoffs.
In their NJSIAA North 1 Group2 state playoff opener as the No. 6 seed, Randolph swept their way to a 5-0 win over No. 11 seed Nutley, on their home court at Brundage Park.
In First Singles, Ava Pinho took a 6-0, 7-5 win. At Second Singles, Thompson recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win, while, at Third Singles Sophie Visser was also victorious with a 6-2,6-1 victory. On the doubles court, First Doubles duo of Ava Olsen and Lucy Girardi recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win, and the Second Doubles group of Amy Myerson and Riyana Chaudhary took their win by a 6-0, 6-1 margin.
Randolph will next travel to play away at West Morris on Oct. 1.
“In the last couple of games of the season, we will have a rematch against West Morris Central and Parsippany Hills, two teams we faced tight 2–3 losses to in our first matchups,” said Thompson. “If we play like we are capable of playing and remember all the lessons we have learned, we can reverse those scores and end our season with some exciting victories.”
Randolph’s next state match up will be on the road at No. 3 seed Tenafly on Tuesday, October 8, time TBA. For Link to PHOTOS CLICK HERE
