    TENNIS RECAP: Phillipsburg Advances with Win Over Bayonne

    PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - Alessandra Tolentino and Ella Burke won their singles matches and second doubles partners Julie Kontoh and Mia Dy also were successful once again to lead the ninth-seeded Phillipsburg High School girl’s tennis team to a 3-2 victory over host and No. 8 seed Bayonne in an NJSIAA North 2 Group 4 first round match on Tuesday.

    The Stateliners won a state game for the second year in a row and for the third time in four seasons. Next up for Phillipsburg (6-4) will be a quarterfinal match at top-seeded Bridgewater-Raritan (10-2) on Oct. 8. In the 2019 season the ‘Liners only win of the season came in a state contest.

    Tolentino, a sophomore, won in straight sets without losing a point for her fourth straight victory on the season to get to 5-5 on the year.

    Burke, a senior, lost the first set 6-3 but stormed back to win in three sets including a 10-5 win in the tiebreaking third set to win for the sixth time in 10 matches.

    Kontoh and Dy won for the fourth straight match and improved to a team-best 7-3 record on the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win in first doubles.

    The ‘Liners Arunima Dhammi lost a tough 6-3, 5-7, 8-10 match at third singles.

    Second doubles – Leanna Yun and Zoe King, B, def. Marissa Kozak and Jessica Bonilla 6-1, 6-0
