BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Berkeley Heights Public Library marked its 71st birthday on Saturday, September 21, with a lively celebration that drew many community members.

The day began with coffee and breakfast snacks, followed by a special storytime led by Library Director Amy Steinbauer. Notable author Jon Gertner, known for his work with The New York Times , spoke in the Highlander Room about his book, The Idea Factory , which details the history of Bell Labs.

After Gertner's talk, Steinbauer, Mayor Angie Devanney, and Councilman Manny Cuoto cut a whimsical hippo birthday cake. The crowd eagerly anticipated the unveiling of the hippo's name, which was chosen through community suggestions and a final poll. “Every vote counts,” Steinbauer remarked as the name "Bubbles" was revealed, winning by just one vote. The patrons who suggested the name were awarded prizes.

As attendees posed for pictures with Bubbles, Miss New Jersey Jabali Kandula arrived, delighting guests by posing for photos and helping children decorate crowns in the Creative Space Room. A fun fact shared during the event was that Kandula had previously worked as a page at BHPL during her high school years. Former Children’s Librarian Laura Fuhro also joined the festivities, reminiscing with patrons and staff.

The afternoon featured a finger-knitting class that attracted families of all ages. Some participants were so inspired that they took their yarn to the Highlander Room, where Steinbauer discussed the history and future of libraries. The celebration concluded with a lively performance by local group The Cover Girls, who entertained guests with songs from Frankie Valli, ABBA, and Fleetwood Mac.

Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed giveaways, with light-up yoyos proving to be a hit among both children and adults. A display showcasing the library's history was also available for viewing in the conference room.
