WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Wood-Ridge boys soccer team shut out New Milford, 2-0, on Senior Night in a NJIC match-up on Friday at the Wood-Ridge Athletic Complex.
Before the game, the team honored 10 players - Tyler Bueno, Jonathan Canseco, David Castro, Anthony Cala, Juan Rodriguez, Daniel Castro, Daniel Aguilar, Matthew Goicoechea, Jordan Cano-Alzate, and Steven Turi - for their dedication and contributions to the Blue Devils boys soccer program. Head Coach Alberico De Pierro announced each player who was met by his parents. They walked to midfield and posed for photos. Each player also received a gift bag with a miniature fat head of their likeness, Blue Devil spiritwear, and snacks.
Wood-Ridge's first goal came in the first half with Cala scoring on an assist from Turi. The Blue Devils second goal came in the opening minutes of the second half when junior Daniel Myrto scored on an assist from Cala.
Goalkeeper Chase LoPresti picked up the win in net for the Blue Devils.
“It's always the best way to celebrate our seniors,” said De Pierro, of the win. “We've never had a Senior Night this early in the season...it's so much better because we still have so much to play. That way we get this one out of the way and it's still nice weather.” “It's great that all of them played, all of them contributed, and I'm just happy for them,” he added. Wood-Ridge faces powerhouse Wallington on Monday afternoon on the road. “Wallington is always that elephant in the room, and they're rocking and rolling again, and it's going to be very difficult at their place,” observed De Pierro. “To beat them, you have to be perfect.” “If we give Wallington, who is so good, time and space (with the ball) , they'll pick us apart,” he continued. “Hopefully, we can go there and give'em hell.”
