SOMERSET, NJ—On October 1, 2024, a partnership between the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender (NJOPD), First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, and the prosecutor's offices of Somerset and Middlesex counties brought a "Clean Slate" expungement clinic to Somerset, providing vital legal assistance to over 225 residents, according to a press release.

The clinic offered free services aimed at helping eligible residents clear their criminal records. Experienced attorneys from NJOPD guided attendees through the eligibility process, helped them complete necessary paperwork, and provided information on other support services available in the community.

State Assemblyman Joe Danielsen, who was crucial in organizing the clinic, expressed his commitment to second chances for individuals with past offenses.

“Far too often, small offenses can mar a person's life and affect their ability to get a job, build a business, and pursue their dreams," Danielsen said in a news release.

He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in promoting social justice and fostering a fairer society.

Danielsen also thanked the First Baptist Church for hosting the event and the legal professionals from both counties' prosecutor's offices and the NJOPD. He specifically acknowledged Public Defender Jennifer Sellitti for her leadership in making the program successful.
