SPARTA, NJ – Chess for Charity will be providing the opportunity for Sparta students to continue to learn and play chess as well as compete in tournaments. The Sparta schools said they would not allow the program to continue to use the school facilities, though Pope John has approved the program for their schools.
“As chess lovers, we could not let go of chess in our community, not to mention the opportunity for the teams to play several tournaments. So, we are providing the kids in our town with an alternative and hosting meets/lessons for them through Chess for Charity,” Anshu Iyer of Chess for Charity said.
During Native American Heritage Month in November, Chess for Charity will be continuing their fundraising support for the Ramapough Lunaape Nation “who are still struggling to attain food sovereignty and sustainability.” They have supported them for two years.
The Iyer siblings said the fundraiser is two Indian cooking lessons hosted by their mom, on October 19 and 26. They are also hosting a chess tournament on November 2 at the Sparta Library.
Sparta’s Athletic Director Steve Stoner reached out to Iyer on Friday about the program’s cancelation.
“Our chess club was not canceled. The chess club was an outside organization that used our facilities. They are just no longer allowed to use our facilities. Moving forward, I will be looking to start a chess club here at the school as well, if I can find a staff member to run it,” Stoner said.
Sparta Superintendent Matthew Beck said, “To date there have been no applicants for our high school chess club, which is a stipend position set forth in the contract. There are no other school-sponsored chess activities that have been brought to us or not allowed.”
Chess for Charity will be at the Sparta Library on Sunday, October 6 at 1:30 p.m. for an information session. Anyone interested in attending this session can RSVP here .
