    Center for Hope Hospice Gala Will Honor Unity Bank's James Hughes on Oct. 17

    SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – The Center for Hope Hospice gala will honor James Hughes, the president of Unity Bank, on Thursday, October 17, at the Shackamaxon Country Club ( 100 Tillinghast Turn, Scotch Plains) . The event begins with a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m. followed by a program that starts at 7:40 p.m. in the main ballroom.

    James Hughes is a long-time Center for Hope Trustee who has been very generous to the Center both financially and with his expertise. He began his career at Unity Bank in December 2000 as the Executive VP and CFO. In   2003, he was appointed President and CEO of the bank and its parent company, Unity Bancorp, Inc.

    Prior to Unity Bank, Hughes was a Senior VP of Finance at Summit Bancorp. He graduated from St Mary’s College in May 1980 with a BS in Accounting/Finance and completed his MBA in Finance from Seton Hall University in 1983. Hughes later passed the CPA exam.  He has served as an active member of the Community Bankers Association and the New Jersey Bankers Association in various officer positions since becoming Unity Bank’s President.

    The Center for Hope Hospice provides terminally ill patients with the natural, humane care known as hospice and their families or loved ones with physical, emotional, and spiritual support during their time of need. The Center provides caring quality of life that supports the individual’s right to live out the remainder of their life with dignity and in comfort, surrounded by the love of family and friends, and eased from the burdens of distress be it physical, emotional, spiritual, financial or social.​ The Center also provides family and loved ones with the opportunity to discover and embrace the gift of life as they journey through loss.

    The Center welcomes all terminally ill patients, their families and loved ones without concern for race, ethnicity, religious affiliation or ability to pay at Peggy’s House in Scotch Plains, ​where each resident has their own private room. Residents can enjoy their privacy without ever having to be alone; the expert staff includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified home health aides, who are on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Meanwhile, Peggy’s House (1900 Raritan Road) has multiple common areas for both patients and families to enjoy.  Center for Hope also operates a facility in Elizabeth and runs The Hope Chest at 26 Prospect Street in Westfield.

    Every year, the Center for Hope's Charitable Care Program grows.  This year alone, the Center has returned almost $3.8 million to the community in the form of free or significantly reduced-cost care.  The need for this charitable care is rising and will continue to do so.
