RIDGEWOOD, NJ - The most recent grid soil investigation conducted at the Zabriskie-Schedler House & Property (Schedler Property) revealed toxins throughout the property.

In May 2024, Matrix New World Engineering (Matrix) performed a soil investigation on the berm portion of the site that revealed several sample locations contained benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene, lead and mercury. After the berm area tested positive for toxins, Matrix began the grid soil investigation to determine if toxins spread throughout the site.

The grid investigation consisted of 28 samples retrieved from a 10,000-square-foot location on the property. Of those 28 samples, eight tested positive for benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene and mercury.

Specifically, benzo(a)pyrene was found in six soil samples at concentrations of 0.642 mg/kg to 0.997 mg/kg and in two soil samples at concentrations of 2.41 mg/kg to 3.35 mg/kg. Two soil samples contained benzo(a)anthracene at concentrations of 2.37 mg/kg to 3.37 mg/kg. Mercury was found in one soil sample at a concentration of 1.00 mg/kg.

Based on these results, Matrix recommends removing the berm and conducting further testing to determine the volume of soil needed to be removed from the property. Once the further test results are reviewed by the council, Matrix will make conclusive recommendations as to the remediation that is required on the site with the approval of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).

All soil investigation results and documentation regarding the Schedler Property can be found on the village website.
