    Armed Fugitive Arrested by Red Bank Police After Attempted Escape on Coopers Bridge

    RED BANK, NJ: On Sunday, October 6, a routine arrest took a dangerous turn when Red Bank police officers apprehended Wayne Accoo, a 40-year-old resident of Asbury Park, after he fled from law enforcement and resisted arrest while carrying a loaded firearm.

    The incident occurred around 1:48 p.m. on Coopers Bridge, Route 35, when Patrolmen Piero Vescio and Chris Fuentes attempted to arrest Mr. Accoo on an outstanding Red Bank Municipal Court warrant.

    When Ptl. Fuentes informed Mr. Accoo of the warrant and initiated the arrest, Accoo immediately fled on foot toward Red Bank. Ptl. Fuentes gave chase, and during the struggle, Mr. Accoo repeatedly attempted to reach into his right front pocket.

    Ptl. Vescio quickly arrived to assist, and together, the officers subdued Accoo. Upon searching the suspect, the officers discovered a .22 caliber handgun in the very pocket Mr. Accoo had been reaching for. Additionally, they found 33 tabs of a suspected controlled dangerous substance in his backpack.

    Mr. Accoo faces several criminal charges, including:

    • Unlawful possession of a weapon, 2C:39-5B
    • Possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, 2C:39-4A
    • Certain person not to possess a weapon, 2C:39-7
    • Resisting arrest, 2C:29-2A
    • Hindering apprehension, 2C:29-3B
    • Obstructing the administration of law, 2C:29-1
    • Aggravated assault on police, 2C:12-1(5)(a)
    • Possession of a controlled dangerous substance, 2C:35-10A(1)

    Accoo was transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Facility after his arrest.

    Capt. Mike Frazee commended the officers for their swift and professional handling of the situation: "I am thankful that no one was injured during the encounter. The officers did a tremendous job, and I credit them for relying on their defensive tactics training. Their quick actions prevented what could have been a very dangerous situation. This is just great police work!"
