BAYONNE, NJ - The Bayonne Police Department is presenting  a sensory-friendly, quiet “Touch-a-Truck” program on Oct. 17th from 5 to 7 p.m. in the lower portion of the 16th Street park.

“Bayonne Calming Sirens" is a free event, designed to allow the public to meet their first responders and learn about community resources focused on health and safety.

It will include the Bayonne Fire Department, the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management, McCabe’s Ambulance, as well as other state and local agencies.

Created by Bayonne resident Elisha DeMaria in 2019, the event is similar to the annual Night Out Against Crime that takes place each August, but without all the noise.

Special-needs children often react negatively to sirens and other loud sounds and this event is designed to allow these children to interact with first responders without things that otherwise might alarm them.

The event is open to all children, special needs or not, but would have a very positive effect on the target audience, organizers say.
