HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ – The Hasbrouck Heights Police have arrested and charged a 31-year-old Irvington resident on multiple charges, including an attempt to intercept packages delivered to a home.
On October 8th, 2024, at approximately 3:17pm, Hasbrouck Heights Police, including Officer Brian Donohue, Officer Kevin Condal, Officer Joseph Olivo, Officer John Mullins, Officer Johanna Sanchez, Officer Liam Cabri, Detective Sergeant Brad Dussault, and Detective Sergeant Nick Brunetti, responded to the 400 block of Burton Avenue on a report of a suspicious individual attempting to intercept packages at a residence.
Upon arrival, officers contacted an adult male who stated he worked for a company that was a Verizon authorized dealer and worked in a division specializing in packages that had been delivered to the wrong address, according to Hasbrouck Heights Lieutenant John Behr.
The individual in question provided officers with a well-rehearsed story as to his reasoning for being at that location as well as an employee identification from that company stating he was affiliated with Verizon. He was also in possession of an alleged work issued tablet. The male provided officers with conflicting information that didn't add up or make sense. He was unable to provide his supervisors' information as well as a work order number for this specific package delivery.
Upon investigation, the police determined that prior to approaching the residence, the individual had stopped the UPS driver inquiring about the package delivery looking to intercept, only to be told it had already been delivered.
He was detained and eventually taken into custody without incident. He was found to be in possession of a photocopied fraudulent NJ driver's license with the name of the Burton Avenue resident where the package was delivered, but with a photo of the accused which would have been presented to the UPS driver. The package contained (1) Apple I phone and (2) Apple I Watches, a total value of $2,484.33.
Ryan D. Rawls, a 31-year-old male from Irvington, NJ was charged with the following and released pending a mandatory court date. Charges included Criminal Attempt to commit package theft; Hindering apprehension; Criminal Trespass; Possession of fraudulent government documents, and Identity Theft.
Hasbrouck Heights Police Chief Joseph Rinke credited the Patrol and Detective Divisions with “an outstanding job responding and working together to investigate and effect this arrest.” He also reminded the residents of Hasbrouck Heights to "Stay vigilant, and if you see something, say something". This was a great example of teamwork by the community and law enforcement."
