LINDEN, NJ — For many years now, the Linden Public Library has been quietly but consistently working to support the arts, making dance, music, theater, drawing, sketching, and painting accessible to Linden residents, families, and, especially, children. It has done so with the steady support of a special Union County Local Arts grant designed for precisely such a purpose: to provide funding for local organizations supporting arts programs throughout the county.

Applicants for the grant must be Union County-based and incorporated in New Jersey for at least two years. The Local Arts Program (LAP) is open to arts-based organizations but also libraries, schools, and even governmental departments and organizations that produce arts projects.

According to Union County's website , “The local art grant's aim is to promote public recognition of the arts, strengthen local arts organizations, increase accessibility and participation in the arts, and foster collaborations within the community.”

At Linden Public Library, those tasked with utilizing the grant have chosen to focus on children's programming in the fall, spring, and summer months in order to coincide with the library's busiest times of the year.

The grant the library received specifically focuses on New Jersey performing artists with an emphasis on diverse programming, all in an effort to reach underserved communities while promoting high-quality arts education.

Some examples of the programs that the library has organized and administered with the assistance of the grant include:

American painter Robert Henri once wrote, “Art when really understood is the province of every human being.”

Thanks to the fine folks at Linden Public Library and their continued commitment to cultivating the arts and making creative, expressive, and inspired activities accessible to the wider community, along with some generous help from Union County, the sentiment Henri conveyed most certainly remains alive and well in the City of Linden!
