WASHINGTON — The St. Bonaventure men’s soccer team played to a 0-0 draw at George Washington University Wednesday.

With the draw, the Bonnies are 1-1-2 in Atlantic 10 conference play and 4-5-3 overall. With this scoreless deadlock, St. Bonaventure picked up its second clean sheet of the season and is now 2-4-1 away from the Marra Athletics Field Complex.

The Bonnies led the match in shots taken with 18, 10 on target. St. Bonaventure had two dangerous opportunities to get a crucial 1-0 lead via Neshawn Sutherland and Keegan Dawson , but the team couldn’t get on the scoresheet.

Despite a slow first half in which both teams couldn't take control of the game or score, the Bonnies ended the first half with six shots, three on target, one of which was a shot from midfielder and attacker Sutherland in the 38th minute.

The attacking trio of Sutherland, Dean Mercer, and Rashid Aroza again came on in the first half to boost St. Bonaventure’s pace, creativity, and dynamism as they did in their 3-1 home win over Davidson College.

Mercer dropped into the center forward position of the attacking line and delivered a through ball to a darting Sunderland on the right wing. Already having sent warnings to the left side of the GWU backline with his pace and physical threat on the right flank, Sunderland pushed through into the right side of the penalty area and took a bottom-driven shot towards the bottom left corner of the net. However, Revolutionaries goalkeeper Tom Macauley stopped Sunderland’s dangerous shot and kept the score 0-0 into halftime.

In the first 25 minutes of the second half, the Bonnies continued where they left off, pushing higher up the field to press the GWU backline and forcing errors to create more opportunities.

St. Bonaventure’s tactical decision and energy levels resulted in the Bonnies taking 12 shots with seven on goal.

The Revolutionaries (2-8-2, 0-3-1) had a brief 10-minute period around the 70-minute mark, during which they capitalized on the Bonnies' open space and attacked them on the counterattack. GWU finished the match with eight shots, one on target, six of which came in the chaotic second half.

Taking advantage of their forward’s line height and speed, the Bonnies closed off the final 10 minutes of the game by crossing the ball into forward Umechi Akuazaoku and midfielders Kenzo Brito and Andres Javitt combing with the forwards to provide incisive passes into the final third.

The best chance of the game for St. Bonaventure came in the 87th minute of the match. Javitt drove into the right top of the penalty box and spotted an open Dawson inside the box. Dawson attempted to tap the ball first time, but his potent shot went over the net.

Despite finishing the match with 18 shots and 10 on target, the Bonnies could not convert on their chances and steal a win at the nation's capital. St. Bonaventure has not picked up a win over the Revolutionaries since their 1-0 home win in 2016 .

The Bonnies complete their two-game road trip with a visit to Philadelphia, where they will face La Salle University for a 4 p.m. Saturday kickoff.
