CROSS RIVER, N.Y. - Two years after Katonah-Lewisboro voters approved up to $49.5 million in capital improvements at all five KLSD schools, work is going as planned, the project’s chief architect reported last month.

“Everything you’re seeing is on budget and a little bit ahead of time,” Russ Davidson, the president of KG+D Architects, told the school board’s Sept 19 meeting.

In a slide show filled with floor plans, photos and renderings, Davidson said work on six of the eight projects has started or is substantially complete. Additions and alterations at Katonah Elementary School and John Jay High School are being redesigned and rebid.

Associate architect Richard Markgraf, who oversees work at the elementary schools, briefed board members on progress at Increase Miller and Meadow Pond’s facilities.

Both schools are getting new wing spaces and the open areas between classrooms have been transformed to permit everything from one-on-one conferences to all-grade presentations.

Much of the work, including new flooring, new electric systems, new duct and mechanical work and asbestos abatement, is invisible. But the wings’ flexible furniture—colorful new tables and array of seating options—can’t be missed, the school district said in a website update.

“The wing spaces offer students and teachers a flexible way to expand outside the walls of their classrooms,” Meadow Pond Elementary Principal Ashlyn Field said. “Wing spaces can be used for small group instruction and large groups lessons, or they can offer a space for students to work individually. Everything can be rearranged to accommodate different kinds of learning.”

Increase Miller Elementary Principal Kerry Ford was enthusiastic about the changes. “Our new learning spaces further promote collaboration and engagement,” she said. “Students seem to really enjoy the flexible options.”

Information was provided in a release by the Katonah-Lewisboro School District.
