PHILLIPSBURG, N.J.- A Phillipsburg woman voiced her concerns to the town council on Wednesday evening regarding a school bus stop outside her home devoid of crossing guards, resulting in ever-increasing dangerous conditions created by speeding cars and unauthorized dump trucks and tractor-trailers using Logan Street. Michelle Jansen, who lives at the intersection of Logan and Green Streets, said the obviously speeding traffic outside her home is caused by drivers using Logan Street as a cut-through, especially at peak rush-hour periods. She also pointed out Logan Street is now considered by locals as a dangerous four-lane highway where the posted speed limit is 35 m.p.h., however, traffic is flying at an estimated 50-60 m.p.h. In addition, Jansen noted that the bus stop at Logan and Claremont Streets has a blind spot. It sits at the top of a hill, and traffic is unaware of its location. Councilman Matt Scerbo, who also resides near Jansen, said the lack of crossing guards makes for a "very unsafe situation" for the children, and it is only worsening, especially on Logan Street. He added when he made a visit to police headquarters to inquire about the danger, he was asked to leave. Council President Pete Marino said the problems need to be addressed by both the police department responsible for hiring crossing guards and the speeding, and the local school board who determines bus stop locations. In other business, the Council established this year's Halloween trick-or-treating date for Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
