Phillipsburg Man Arrested in Connection to Newark Fatal Shooting

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - A 21-year-old from Phillipsburg has been arrested and charged a month after a shooting led to a fatality.

Zyion A. Williams-Jones, 21, who holds addresses in both Phillipsburg and Newark, was arrested in connection with the September 2, 2024, shooting death of Darryl Craft, 33.

On October 7, 2024, Williams-Jones was charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

After midnight on Sept 2., Newark officers responded to reports of shots fired around the area of Bergen Street and Chadwick Avenue. At the scene, officers located Craft, who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds near 139 Chadwick Avenue, according to a statement from Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage. Craft was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:54 am.

This investigation was conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. Williams-Jones was arrested without incident, in Phillipsburg, by detectives from the Prosecutor’s office.

“The members of the Homicide Task Force worked non-stop to identify and ultimately apprehend the offender,” shared Prosecutor Stephens as he commended the detectives and assistant prosecutors.

Williams-Jones is being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility pending an appearance in the Essex County Central Judicial Processing (CJP) court.
