MOUNT LAUREL, NJ — The Mount Laurel Fire Department (MLFD) has received high marks for its services to the community from a nationwide company that collects information about property and casualty insurance risks.

The MLFD recently underwent an evaluation by Verisk for its ability to provide fire protection services to Mount Laurel. Verisk collects information useful in many aspects of insurance underwriting, including evaluations of public fire protection, flood risk, and the adoption and enforcement of building codes in individual communities. Information on municipal services helps the communities with their efforts to manage and mitigate their risk.

Through its Public Protection Classification (PPC) program, Verisk evaluates municipal fire-protection efforts in communities throughout the United States, as a community's investment in fire mitigation is a proven and reliable predictor of future fire losses, according to the company. Further, the program provides an objective and countrywide standard that helps fire departments to plan and budget for facilities, equipment and training.

After experts analyze relevant data and generally accepted best practices, Verisk then assigns a PPC — a number from 1 to 10, with Class 1 generally representing superior property fire protection, and a Class 10 indicating that the community's fire suppression program does not meet Verisk's minimum criteria.

The MLFD, after its recent evaluation, has improved to a Class 2 rating, after being rated Class 3 in 2015. The MLFD's Class 2 rating makes the Department one of the highest rated in the country — of the 38,000 fire departments surveyed by Verisk throughout the United States in 2023, only 6 percent achieved a rating of 1 or 2.

“We're proud to report that we have improved to a Class 2 rating,” said the MLFD. “We will continue to implement improvement steps to serve our community better.”
