MORRISTOWN, NJ -  The Colonial Grill food truck, operated by William and Kevin Valbuena, a father-son duo, asked the Morristown council at this month's council meeting to extend their operating hours on Friday evenings, under Ordinance O-28-2024.

Kevin Valbuena spoke at the council meeting and asked the council to approve extending their hours of operation on Friday evenings until 1:30am. Bars close at 2pm and  as of now, the food truck needs to close by 9pm on Fridays.

“This is more than a business for us. This is a family venture that we have been growing for nearly nine years”, the younger Valbuena said. “We have been proud to serve Morristown”.

“We also believe that we are a benefit to town”, he said.

He said there is a demand for late night food establishments as the local bars let out.

“There is a real need for late night food options”, Valbuena stated. “We understand the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment in town”.

Valbuena said they have invested in “the quietest generator” they could find and have not seen any evidence of noise, disturbance or misconduct when they were open late.

During the discussion portion of the meeting, councilman David Silva said, “I think we need to be balanced. I think that closing at 1:30am is too late and when people come out of the bars, they leave as soon as possible" to avoid noise and all that".

Councilmember Silva suggested amending the hours to 11pm. Councilmember Robert Iannaccone said he agreed with Silva but asked that the ordinance be able to be revisited after getting comments from police and neighbors.

“I think this is a valid consideration (to change the time)”, said Iannaccone. “Let's let the administration bring it to the Chief, bring it to the Department of Health, so that they could give an opinion”.

The council voted to table the Ordinance O-28- 2024.
