PHILLIPSBURG, NJ — The Phillipsburg Board of Education met on Monday, October 7, 2024, approving new advisors for several clubs and activities aimed at enhancing student involvement and personal growth at Phillipsburg Middle School .
With a unanimous vote, the board appointed program leaders for key student activities:
Let Me Run Program : Daniel Turner and Timothy Smith will serve as Lead Facilitators. Let Me Run is designed for boys and goes beyond running. The program focuses on building teamwork, emotional growth, and self-esteem, all while encouraging an active lifestyle. According to the Let Me Run website, the program aims to reduce the challenges associated with a lack of emotional expression in pre-teen and teenage boys, which can lead to stress, addiction, and violence.
Girls on the Run Program : Angie Diaz Venegas and Rachel Crouse were approved as Lead Facilitators. Girls on the Run inspires middle school girls to embrace their uniqueness, build confidence, and focus on both physical and emotional health. Through fun and physical activities, girls develop skills to write their own stories and become critical thinkers.
Interact Club : Kim Hall and Amanda VanRiper were appointed as coordinators of the Interact Program. This Rotary-sponsored club is designed to develop leadership skills while promoting community service and international understanding. Interact members will work on at least two projects per year: one that benefits their school or local community and another focused on global issues.
Battle of the Books : Teachers are needed to prepare students for this year's Battle of the Books competition, an event where students from across the district test their literary knowledge. The competition is a blend of virtual and in-person events, showcasing middle school students' love for reading.
Additional clubs available at Phillipsburg Middle School include the Drama Club, National Junior Honor Society, Ski Club, Student Council, and Yearbook Club. Each of these activities provides students with opportunities for leadership, creativity, and social engagement while promoting the core values of the school’s Student Code of Conduct.
